Lessons in Perseverance, Choices and Connections
In 2016, Sofia Rosales-Scatena was nearly killed when her squad car was hit by another vehicle. In 2017, after a nearly year-long recovery, she and her husband were in the final stages of adopting two children when her husband died of a heart attack.
Instilling Hope, Making a Difference
When Alice Jordan attempted to take her life at 16, her mother came alongside her and gave her the strength to carry on. When her parents’ car was not suitable for her first trip to college in Bloomington, Indiana, a community member transported her and five other Latino students in a tomato truck.

Alfredo Perez rose from a lower-income and sometimes dangerous Fort Wayne neighborhood to become a corporate executive.

“Latinos Count is my passion. For me, it is a labor of love. I don’t think there’s an organization in our market that is solely focused on Latino youth, one that prepares them for life after high school.
This is important because often times language becomes a barrier in Latino families living in the U.S. Latinos Count helps bridge the gap between the language barrier and complex information about higher education that is not always easily understood by first generation Latino parents due to the language challenges, and for young adults because it is confusing.”
